A San Diego man has been arrested for allegedly participating in the Jan. 6, 2021 insurrection at the U.S. Capitol.
Jonathan Humphreys, 29, who was dubbed the “Capitol Smoker” by some investigators because he was caught on video smoking a cigarette in the Capitol Rotunda, was taken into custody earlier this month.
According to the charging documents, Humphreys, who owns a local security company called Humphreys National Security Company, admitted that he had attended the riot with other supporters of former U.S. President Donald Trump.
The website for his company is now defunct, but an archived version describes it as “The Top Tier of Armed Security In The United States.”
According to a criminal complaint, Humphreys eventually admitted to an FBI investigator that he had been at the U.S. Capitol that day.
“Humphreys was identified on footage from U.S. Capitol security cameras taken on January 6, 2021, and from videos and photos provided in tips to the FBI,” the complaint says. ” After reviewing these tips and videos, your affiant identified Humphreys in the security camera videos and three of the five still images provided by tipsters.”
The FBI found the same coat plus a body-worn camera during a search of his apartment.
Humphreys faces four federal charges, including disorderly conduct, demonstrating on Capitol grounds, and entering a restricted building without authority.
