Del Mar beaches have reopened for swimming and surfing after a shark attack seriously injured a swimmer 100 yards off 17th Street on Sunday morning.
The victim, a 46-year-old man, remains hospitalized. Injuries to his torso, left arm and hand are considered significant but not life-threatening.
The 48-hour beach closure from 6th Street to North Beach followed guidelines set by the California Marine Safety Chiefs Association and the Shark Lab at California State University Long Beach.
The victim was one of about a dozen ocean swimmers who train regularly in the Del Mar area.
Swimmers are reminded to always swim with a buddy. Operating hours for Del Mar lifeguards are from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m.
