A weakening low pressure system will produce periods of light showers into Tuesday, as well as strong onshore winds across the mountains and desert slopes, according to the National Weather Service.
High temperatures Tuesday will be 65 to 68 at the coast, 65 to 68 in the western valleys, 59 to 64 near the foothills, 52 to 61 in the mountains and 74 to 77 in the deserts, the NWS said.
Transient ridging midweek leads to mostly dry weather and slightly warmer temperatures before a deeply amplified trough takes hold of the western United States by Friday, when more substantial rain is in the forecast.
This deep trough will also draw a cold airmass into the region that will keep high temperatures 10-20 degrees below average Saturday and Sunday, according to meteorologists.
Heavy snow could accumulate above 5,000 feet with a risk of at least light accumulation down to around 2,500 feet. The NWS said that anyone planning travel through Southern California next weekend, especially in the mountains, should prepare to delay travel or take alternate routes.
