MiraCosta College will welcome Oscar-winning actor Richard Dreyfuss for a free event at 5:30 p.m. Saturday.
Dreyfuss will be interviewed by a member of the film faculty, Professor Florene Villane.
RSVP online for his appearance, at the Concert Hall on MiraCosta’s Oceanside Campus, 1 Barnard Drive, Bldg. 2400.
The actor’s career, spanning several decades, includes parts in the iconic ’70s films Jaws, American Graffiti and Close Encounters of the Third Kind. He won the Academy Award for Best Actor in 1978 for The Goodbye Girl and was last nominated for the 1995 film Mr. Holland’s Opus.
He last appeared in the 2023 film Sweetwater, about a player’s journey in 1950 to become the first Black man to sign an NBA contract.
In addition to acting, Dreyfuss is known for his activism and writing. He founded the Dreyfuss Civics Initiative, a nonprofit, nonpartisan organization with the goal of reviving civics teaching in American public schools.
His book, One Thought Scares Me, released last year, outlines the causes and consequences of the lack of civics education over the last 50 years.
He also drew criticism last year when he objected to recent rules put forth by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences that are intended to diversify Best Picture nominees for the Academy Awards. He called the standards “patronizing” and “so thoughtless.”
