OK, folks it’s going to be dry at least part of this San Diego weekend. We got through Thursday, there’s more coming as soon as Sunday. Make the most of it the next couple of days!
The weekend features two film fests:
- It’s the first weekend for the San Diego International Jewish Film Festival, with both in-person and virtual screenings. Films start at 10 a.m. Friday, with the legal documentary Without Precedent. Sunday’s full slate includes The Monkey House, nominated 11 times for the Ophir awards, Israel’s Oscars. Individual screenings, at the Jacobs Family Campus of the Lawrence Jewish Family Community Center, cost $18.
- The Museum of Photographic Arts at the San Diego Museum of Art hosts the 14th annual San Diego Human Rights Watch Film Festival beginning Friday. The festival features films on communities battling for basic rights, including LGBTQ+ teens, refugees, the disabled Native Americans. Each in-person screening, which cost $10, will be accompanied by question-and-answer sessions with filmmakers and advocates.
Is life better with a controller in hand? Then Gamer Con, at the Tenth Avenue Arts Center, might be for you. It includes, naturally, PC and console video games, but also tabletop, role-playing games and miniature gaming along with gaming art and movies. For gamers over 21, enjoy the GamerCon Lounge, featuring games and cocktails. The show opens at noon Friday and continues through Sunday. One-day passes start at $10 and three-day at $30.
The Music Box in Little Italy hosts locals the B-Side Players and Obed Padilla at 9 p.m. Friday. The B-Side Players, kicking off their 30th anniversary tour, mix the sounds of Cuba, Jamaica, Mexico and Brazil with funk, rock, jazz and hip-hop. Tickets cost $22.
Don’t envy that hot influencer bragging about her perfect home on TikTok. Head to the San Diego Home Improvement Expo at the Del Mar Fairgrounds for in-depth ideas on your own refresh. The free event, on Saturday and Sunday, includes demonstrations, hundreds of exhibits of home-improvement products and services, and if you’re close to hiring someone, consultations too.
Black Comix Day 2024, at the World Beat Center in Balboa Park, features Black creators in comics, films and animation. Panels include “Black Culture in Anime and Manga.” Food will be available too. The two-day event, opening at 10 a.m. Saturday, is free – register for tickets online – and open to all ages.
In the mood for love? Try the 14th annual Coronado Valentine’s Day 10K, 5K and 1 Mile Fun Run. The one-mile run begins at 7:30 a.m. Sunday with the other two runs beginning at 8 a.m. It’s a “matchmaking” event, with runners wearing red, yellow or green bibs to indicate their relationship status. Not to mention their costumes – have your pink and heart-decorated best ready for the event, at Tidelands Park. A live band will perform. Entry fees start at $35.
