Get out! Oh, we’re hospitable here at Weekend Guide. We’re not throwing you out. We mean outdoors. This San Diego weekend, try good music, fab food and a nature tour, while indoors, there’s a healthy helping of theater too.
The two-day North Park Music Fest begins Friday, fanning out from North Park Mini Park to the surrounding streets. Diverse artists on the slate, from the San Diego and Baja sides, reflect the theme of “Music Beyond Borders.” Friday’s performers include Chula Vista native Jackie Mendoza, once a Billboard “Latin Artist on the Rise,” Local food vendors provide the eats, and local craft breweries, the suds. Young music fans also may enjoy stilt walkers, magicians and a photo booth. Gates open at 4 p.m. Friday and noon Saturday. Single-day tickets are $45 and two-day passes, $60.
Country star Jordan Davis – he won Song of the Year for his hit “Buy Dirt”– takes the stage at Petco Park’s Gallagher Square on his “Damn Good Time Tour.” Joining him on the bill, at 7 p.m. Friday, are Mitchell Tenpenny and Ashley Cooke. Tickets are $61.50.
It’s opening weekend for plays – one a classic, one based on a pair of classic stars – at the region’s most heralded theaters:
- Country music superstar spouses Johnny Cash and June Carter Cash are the subjects of The Ballad of Johnny and June at the La Jolla Playhouse. The show, told through the eyes of their son, John Carter Cash and directed by Tony-Award winner Des McAnuff, features Cash’s iconic hits, such as “Ring of Fire.” The 2005 film Walk the Line famously told their story as well. Some dates on the run, through July 7, already are sold out.
- The Old Globe is known for Shakespeare in the summertime. But how about a “fresh and funny take” on Hamlet? Fat Ham, the 2022 Pulitzer-Prize winning Tony nominee, sets Hamlet not at a castle in Denmark, but a family cookout in the South. There, Juicy, with burdens of his own, is confronted by the ghost of his father, who yes, is still set on revenge for his murder. The play runs through June 23. Tickets start at $35.
The Port of San Diego’s “Day at the Park” program stops at Cesar Chavez Park in Barrio Logan at 11 a.m. Saturday. Local artists perform and local vendors provide the treats. Look for kid-friendly activities too. The event is part of the port’s Tidelands Activation Programs.
Taste the best in party grub at Wing Fest San Diego with samples from local vendors – spirits too. Live DJs and more provide entertainment. Head to Ruocco Park at noon Saturday. Admission starts at $40.

Enjoy live music, a guided hike around the lagoon, yoga, an art workshop and a catered lunch.
