A suspected driver under the influence caused multiple freeway crashes and knocked out power to at least 200 households early Sunday morning when his car hit and brought down a power pole on a frontage road in South Bay.
According to Onscene.Media, a man was driving a white BMW northbound on Bay Boulevard next to Interstate 5 in Chula Vista when he crashed the car into a power pole and brought it down at around 5:30 a.m.
When the power pole fell, it also took down heavy cables with it, some of which were across the I-5 freeway at about head level, making drivers unable to swerve to avoid hitting them.
At least eleven southbound drivers and two northbound ones ended up hitting the power cables, which were heavy enough to damage their windshields.
Power was also knocked out for at least 237 SDG&E customers.
A portion of the power cables also came down across trolley tracks just east of the freeway, disrupting service, while other lines landed in a playground at Colorado Street and K Street.
The driver was arrested at the scene for driving under the influence.
No injuries were reported.
